Update/Upgrade iOS over wifi vs itunes question

I've only done a few iOS upgrades with iTunes and connected to PC, never via wifi/OTA. I've seen the 7.0.6 and 6.1.6 updates released with the security fixes and wanted to ask if updating iOS via wifi requires backing up first, etc? We have an iPad2 with photos that have been Imported via the SD card adapter and not Synced via PC. I have iCloud set to back up the device, but Not those photos because they total more than the 5GB iCloud allows. Will those, or other media be deleted? Or is it simple as installing a Win7 patch (when that goes as supposed to), just click OK and go...no data affected?

Thanks!

OK, seems simple enough then. I just wasn't sure, since I've never done it over wifi before.
The pics, yeah, we could probably look through our hard drives and SD cards to find them again if need be. Or backup w/ iTunes first, right...

Just upgrading (vs updating), to say 7.1, would need to use iTunes/PC to backup then upgrade (in order to keep those Imported pics, etc) then...

Thanks! :)

Nope, when 7.1 comes out publicly, you can just update OTA via WiFi and no need to backup. :)
