If you are updating from lower firmware, you have to do it always as a prevention of lag and errors.
If you do a reboot and a complete reset as a new iphone then how do you get all your data back?

Does iTunes on comp back up all the apps or only stuff like iMessage ,photos and other .Am totally clueless on this .

Staggered release is no phone. I know it would be impossible if every iPhone user updated at the same time but now waiting for your designated time takes the fun out of it.
Most people will try to update a few times today that's for sure.
