Screen dimming with auto brightness off?

SOLUTION- I had the dimming effecting my iPhone max all the time, multiple times a day and it drove me crazy. Only started after iOS 12 download. I was sure the Auto brightness was off, checking ‘display and brightness’ under settings several times to make sure nothing was turned on that would cause the dimming. But only after reading one of the posts above did I realize you need to go to Settings>General>Accessiblilty>Display Accommodations>Auto-Brightness and turn it off. I have no idea why apple would bury this option at this location and not have the option in the brightness settings. And that the default was set to turn on auto brightness when you install iOS 12.

Yes it’s happened from time to time but only for a few minutes. I have auto off

You are a genius! I have been searching for a solution to the auto brightness problem on my ipad for such a long time and just stumbled across your iPhone fix which worked a treat. I agree though - who was the nutter who thought burying it in accessibility was a good idea?!

I turned that off years ago, following the advice in one of the many battery saving posts,glad I did.
