Can't seem to be able to partition the 2tb ssd by using Disk Utility as suggested by iMore article. When I click Partition, it says that "This container can't be split, because the resulting containers would be too small, Also,, the Plus and Minus is greyed out. Just wanted to do a partition of 50 gb so eventually I can boot to Mojave to use 32 bit apps. Currently running Catalina. Would like to be able to boot from an external SSD which would have my bootable Mojave on it Thanks for any help.

With APFS you no longer need to partition the drive to run multiple OSes. You can create a new volume to the container already being used (and it can even be the full size of the drive, so that all volumes can be set to 2 TB - they will just use space as needed from the common pool.)

See https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208891 for instructions.
