Notes icon was there this AM but not now -- how can I retrieve them?

Your Notes icon can't be deleted. If you can't find it in a folder or on another screen, you can reset your home screen. Go to Settings>General>Reset>Reset Home Screen Layout. You should now be able to find your Notes icon.
