My iPad doesn't offer an update past 5.1 and I need an iOS 8

My iPad has a iOS 5.1 and I need at least an 8 to even download apps. How do I do that since my iPad or iTunes does not offer it

If you have the original iPad, you will NOT be able to upgrade past iOS 5.1.1. You will need to purchase an iPad model newer than the original in order for you to enjoy certain features and apps.

Sometimes on my iPad first generation there are some applications that will have a version that is compatible with iPad 1.
