Warning: This is a long post.

Tuesday, September 7, 2010:

The morning started out like any other morning:

4:25 am - iPhone alarm goes off and I hit snooze ... Let me get a few more minutes of sleep zzzzzzzzzzz ....

5:15 am - (Damn I better get up and start my day) ... Check the iPhone; New email, new text, new IM, the ?norm? communication on a Tuesday morning.

I eat breakfast and head off to work.....

Let's jump ahead now ...

12:15 pm - Check my iPhone for new messages, do a little surfing and download from the App store ... Damn I have to message my better half and ask if she wants to go out for supper.

12:18 pm - Let me see if the lady replied to my text message. (Stunned look on my face) What's going on here?!?! ... My iPhone is showing no signs of life; it's as if the battery is dead. What to do, what to do?

Wait until the end of my shift and charge the phone using my car charger.

4:30 pm - get into the car and start it up (vroooommm), plug in the phone finally I get to use the darn thing. Looking down at the phone I notice that nothing is happening. Hmmmm, that's odd. Maybe it?s really drained and needs a few minutes before it starts charging; it's should start charging before I get home. (Driving)

4:50 pm - RRRRRR .... I pull into the driveway and look at the phone, "NOTHING ?!?!?" What's going on? Ohhh, maybe I just need to plug it into the house charger, but you know what, as I do that I'm gonna give Apple a call to see what their take on this is.

5:20 pm - (iPhone is still blank) "Apple Technical Support, XXXXXXX speaking. Can I have you first and last name please?"

"Sure. XXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXX"

"And how may I help you Mr. XXXXXXX?......."

I explained everything and he got me to do all of the trouble shooting techniques, to no avail.

6:00 pm - "Mr. XXXXXXXXX, it sounds like you have a defective device." (No kidding Mr. Technical support person with the IQ of Iron Mike)

"What are my options?"

Technical support person rambles off 4 and I select the option that provides the quickest turnaround time. iPhone is gonna be shipped but my credit card is charged $699 until they receive my defective iPhone; fair enough.

6:20 pm - Done and Done. Pack the iPhone into the box and put it in my night table drawer. My new device should be here on Sept 9th.

Go back to my Blackberry 9700 using a Sim adapter that I bought just in case I decide to buy the Blackberry Torch when it comes out in Canada.

Needless to say, some of my BBM buddies clowned me because of my return from the "mighty iPhone", as one of them sarcastically put it.

Wednesday, September 8, 2010

4:25 am - Blackberry 9700 alarm goes off and I hit snooze ... Let me get a few more minutes of sleep zzzzzzzzzzz .... (Alarm...Alarm...Alarm...Alarm) What!!!! Am I dreaming or something?!?!?! It sounds like the alarm on the iPhone is going off as well. Open the drawer. It is going off!

It's alliiivvveee! I'm soooo happy but oh so sick to my gut as well because I have a new iPhone coming to me but I don't have a visibly defective one to ship back to them. I have to call them as soon as possible to have them cancel the shipment of the new one and revome the charge from my credit card.

8:59 am - (Automated message) "Thank you for calling apple. Our regular business hours are from 9 am -........."

No way!

9:00 am - "Apple Technical Support, XXXXXXX speaking. Can I have you first and last name please?"

I explained all the events and I am told that when I receive the package, ensure that it remains sealed and ship back using the return label supplied with it. Once the package is received by Apple, the charges will be reversed.

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

While at work the package is delivered to a neighbour due to my absence when the courier came. (Why UPS would do that is beyond my understanding, but that's another rant in itself.)

Friday, September 10th, 2010

Neighbour brings the package to my door and I ensure that they haven't tampered with it.

September 11th, 2010 (God Bless those affected by the tragic events of 9/11)

12:00 pm - I drop the package off to the UPS depot for delivery. Finally, everything's done.

Over a week has passed since the initial incident.

Wednesday, September 15, 2010

The day goes as normal until ....

5:23 pm - "Let me see if XXXXXXXX wants to take a trip to Detroit this weekend to catch the Lions vs. Eagles game"

**Pull the iPhone out of my pocket**>**Turn on the iphone** >**Open pingchat**>**message XXXXXXX**>**Check the reply**>**put the iPhone into my pocket**

5:25 pm - "Shoot, let me see if XXXXXXX wants to go for a jog tonight as well......"

**Pull the iPhone out of my pocket**>**DEAD**......

Not again!

5:30 pm - Back on the line with Apple. I went through the whole story with the technical support person.

6:10 pm - "Sorry Mr. XXXXXX, we can't proceed with a claim because your current serial number has been disabled due to the fact that the replacement iPhone (That I didn't open and that I shipped back to them 5 days ago) hasn't been returned, or processed as returned.

What happens next:

1. Rant on tipb.com

Then:

2. Wait for the returned iPhone to be processed
3. Wait for my current serial number to be restored
4. Have a technical support person process another repair claim
5. Wait for my new iPhone to be shipped

I can?t believe this!

That stinks...since you mentioned being in Canada I'm guessing that walking into an Apple or AT&T store was not an option...hopefully you get things squared away

Apple store is an option in Canada, always has been..

Anyway, I suspect you're doing something inadvertently that is bricking the phones. Do you happen to work in a very humid environment or place your iPhone in an area with a lot of condensation? I can't see why this would happen twice in a row, it's never happened to me once and I've owned 6 iPhones.

Should've shipped back the phone that wasn't working right. It's a rant, but there's some user error involved in it. Meanwhile, plug the phone into itunes and see if it can be awoken again. Hold down power button for a bit.

I would have kept the new phone. Apple probably wouldn't have given you any problems even if it wasn't showing signs of your issue.

I don't place my phone in areas that have a lot of condensation. Most times the phone is in my pocket or my hand. The Air in the work place is fairly dry.

I'm really hoping that I didn't cause the issue becasue I don't want it to happen again when I get my replacement.

Hindsight .... I couldn't agree with you more. I do take partial responsibility for not having a phone right now because I knew that something was wrong with it, and I should've sent it back and let Apple deal with it.

Part of the troubleshooting involved pluging the iPhone into itunes and hitting the power button along with the button on the front. The phone didn't respond.

Thanks for the advice.

I'm hoping that this will be the last episode. I must admit that I had a lot of fun posting that message though.

Thanks for the well wishes.
