iOS search results are not available

What would cause the following scenario:

When I swipe down and use the global search feature to look for messages from a contact, I see search results under messages.

But when I click on the results the messages aren’t present. And if I scroll through the messages app, I also cannot
See them.

Are these messages “hidden”?

It isn’t jail broken as far as I know
