I’ve said for years that I prefer using a dedicated e-reader like a Kindle or a Nook. I still have an old Kindle Paperwhite that I use when want to read a good book.

Interesting, I read a lot and decided years ago that the Kindle app was for me,the best solution. I have a Kindle, what variety and state of charge I couldn't tell you. Reading outdoors is too distracting so I don't mind the bright light performance of the phone and tablet. I'm not leaving the phone at home so a Kindle does not come out with me, nor the iPad.

The iPad and Kindle are completely different devices. True, an iPad can be used to read books with, but that's a small part of its functionality. Book reading is the only thing that a Kindle is for.

You can get a Kindle for very little money when they are on sale so there is really no reason to unload your iPad to get one. I have both and enjoy using them for what they are best at.
