How do I know if my iPhone is unlocked?

I requested that AT&T unlock it. The device status page says it is, but to follow "these" directions, which are listed. I called AT&T and they said that meant the device is unlocked.

It didn't seem like the rep knew what she was talking about, so I'd like to see for myself.

Insert a SIM card from a different carrier and see if you can make a phone call. If so, your device is unlocked.

If you don't have a SIM from another carrier, I found that one national big box chain store in my area has pay as you go kits for bringing your own phone for $1.00. You don't need to sign up for service to buy the kit and the SIM card will let you know if there is service without activating.
