Deleting unwanted apps will certainly free up some storage. Sadly, you can't delete Apple's own apps.

You can in iOS 10 but it basically just removes the icon. The core of the app is still imbedded in the iOS.

Just realised that we didn't answer the question. You delete unwanted apps by touching any icon for a few seconds until it starts shaking, and a (X) appears on the top left corner of the icon (and all other icons). Touch the (X) to remove the app.

Actually this isn't very intuitive when you have to explain it!
