Confused by IMessage/Text Message

I have an IPhone 4S with my UK number on it. I also have an IPhone 5 here in Malaysia (where I now live ) with my local number.

Yesterday I received a message which although sent to my Malaysian number, ONLY appeared on my UK phone and not on the local phone!!!
Why would this happen please???

The message was quite important and I do not carry the UK phone: I only see it when at my apartment.

iMessage goes to all Apple devices registered with the same number or email address. It uses WiFi. SMS goes only to a phone number.

Go into the iMessage settings, and there is an option to "receive iMessages at?" and a list of phone numbers and email addresses. Make sure the same numbers and emails are checked on both devices. Also you can pick one email or phone number to be the main callerid for iMessage.

The message may not have been sent via iMessage. What colour was it in the SMS app, Blue or Green?

If it is blue (iMessage) I'd follow the advice above and see how you have iMessage delivery set up for your devices.
