There is no orphan app as you like to call it. You can access contacts in two ways: either through the phone app or through the contact app. The only difference is that the phone app does not allow you to go into landscape mode.

I don't understand how you had no idea of the app when multiple people told you about the 'orphan app' once again think the smart phone is a little too smart for you....
