High Sierra and Time Machine Backup issues

Ever since I have upgraded my machines to High Sierra, every time I do a time machine backup, it slows down my internet access to a crawl.

I don’t even have time machine set to auto backup anymore and I now do it manually and when I am done, I eject my time machine backup drive.

Anyone else out there having similar issues with time machine after updating their OS?

Are you doing backups over the network now? Have you always done them this way?

I have always done my backups using an external Thunderbolt or USB drive.
