Can I move part of my photo library to an external drive?

I am a novice Mac user and my Macbook Air's hard drive is almost full. I would like to move just a few years of pictures to an external drive and not the entire library. I am hoping to have access to our most recent pictures without having to hook up the drive. I do not have a cloud based photo library currently.
