I'm trying to think about the haswell procers and better battery but the pro is sounding better especially since I can upgrade it later...

The pro. Fo sho. The extra upgrade able ram and hard drive will benefit you long term.

The extra ram will make a difference on deployment when it comes to skype. Btw where you going I just got back from A Japan deployment not too long ago. And if you are in college the college discount is 100 more off than the student that's why I got my 13 in pro for 999 I got the lower end non retina. Absolutely love it after a couple days of playing with it now.
