Jailbreaking question

I know from jaibreaking my 3G phone with the windows tool, it really only worked if you had a few (or none) third party apps installed. I tried many times to jailbreak a phone with 4 pages of apps and had no success.

Is this also true when using redsn0w? Do I basically need to wipe my iphone, jailbreak, and then reinstall the apps?

Better safe than sorry. First restore your phone and set it up as a new phone, then jailbreak before syncing the apps.
