Supply of the iPhone 5S 16GB Model is not not high in my area.

You'd think with the holidays here and all that, the supply of iPhone 5s 16GB (various colours) would be high.

But, alas, in my area I can only find 32GB versions of the Gold or Silver. Rather frustrating really, I didn't want to spend as much as $299.99.

I think the reason behind that is because the 16gb is a "dying breed" just like the 8gb. People are doing a lot more with their smartphones nowadays so the more GB is neccessary

Hmm, that is a good point Derrick. Albeit, things are moving to more cloud storage now, hence I don't see the need to spend so much on local storage. We more and more moving to a 'streaming' base, hence I wouldn't want to invest too much on local storage.

I guess only time will really tell...

Do you have films and lots of music on your device? I only want 16GB because I don't load films on my device, only music. I load films on my iPad Mini. I rarely, if ever watch a film on my smartphone. I just don't see the need for that...

I guess I'm one of the last old school guys. I'm still using a 16gb and have plenty of room. :)

This is true, cloud storage is growing, but things like games, personal music library are getting larger and I feel that people are more apt to keep stuff on their phones. just my opinion of course

...again, another valid point. I prefer having access to the files versus streaming. I guess I can convince the missus to give me some money to thus buy a 32GB unit ;)

Not to mention the OS's are also taking up more GB... if I'm not mistaking the last OS took approx 5gb

The 5S was heavily discounted by a lot of Brick & Mortar Retailers over the last several weeks. This may have contributed to creating additional supply constraints. I picked my daughter up a 16 gig 5S for $124.99

I wish I could use the likes of Best Buy or WalMart. But, I have a Business account, and thus I have constraints...

The OS actually takes less then 1GB. Read this, it's all in how storage is marketed.

When manufacturers of such devices say "GB", they mean what is called a "decimal gigabyte", which equals exactly 1,000,000,000 (one billion) bytes. When your device's operating system describes the capacity of the storage, they use what is called a "binary gigabyte", which equals exactly 1,073,741,824 bytes.

It turns out that a decimal gigabyte is approximately 93% the size of a binary gigabyte, so if your iphone is 16 decimal gigabytes, your operating system will report that it is approximately: 16 * 0.93 = 14.8 binary gigabytes, minus what the OS occupies, equals 12 ~13GB's.

Your computer does the same thing.

Oooooookay, however or whatever, I do know that my 32gb Gold iPhone 5s didn't start out with 32gb and more like 27gb so something is taking from the GB amount

That's right. The bigger the storage is, the more space is "missing" like on a 1TB drive. The OS on the computer will show that there is only about 933GB left on it. The OS isn't taking up that much space. It's just how they market the drive because 1TB sounds better then advertising it as 933GB.

I'm getting by fine with 16gb but a 32gb is probably a sweet spot these days. With the growth and simplisty of cloud storage it is less necessary...but I still prefer having media local...old habits

I'm wondering if you've tried Best Buy. They have it on sell for $124 with a 2 year contract.
