Does the iPhone compress images as you set them to wallpaper?

I'm wondering about this because the image is crisp in my photobook but looks like, well, utter **** when it is set to wallpaper.

Anyone know?

I downloaded that pic and tried to put it on my wallpaper, the same thing happens.

However, I used a picture I already had that wasn't in the iPhone screen res and nothing changed or it DID change and I didn't notice.

Maybe you're right, maybe the images are compressed.

what file type is it? jpg or gif or what?

That?s a .jpg but I also tried it with a .png with the same results. This is something I made myself, I haven't had such horrible compression on all the wallpapers I have downloaded though. Anything I'm doing wrong?
