Not receiving texts

My wife isn't receiving any texts. I recently updated her phone to the new software. I know they phone might be old because she currently has a 5S. Her number isn't blocked by the other person. What's going on??

Does she have any carrier signal?
Can you text her?

Is there any chance that she had settings / messages / iMessage turn on with the old phone but turned off on the new phone?
