Purge iMessage Memory of Old Numbers

As time passes, more and more friends have phone number changes. I update them in Contacts, of course. But when I go to message them and start typing their name, like "Frank", several options come up, including old number and new number. Well I don't remember which is which. How can I tell? Right now, I have inconveniently open up Contacts and see which one is right. Is there a way to purge the old, unused numbers out, so they'll quit coming up as an option?
