How to send & recieve sms on ipad 7th gen

Hiya i recently got the new ipad 7th gen off o2 with 200 free sms in plan as well as 4g internet
I can not get any sms from anybody at all so cant even set up my whatsapp or other apps needing to send code via sms format
Ive tried what i found in here and typed in the number manually but when i do the number turnes red & when i try to send it doesnt work
It will only work if i put in an email address then it sends to that?
I dont own an iphone only an ipad with the sim card inserted?
How do i get sms to come through ?

I don’t think an iPad - even with cellular connectivity - can send or receive texts. In the same way that you cannot use an iPad to make phone calls.

I think that the only way you can send messages is to send other iOS Users messages via iMessage.
