    On my mail icon, it says I have 16,872 unread messages. Never did that before yesterday.

    Try the following.

    Go to that specific mail account's Settings and then disable the toggle next to "Mail". Afterwards, turn off the device for about a minute and then turn it back on. Go back and re-enable the toggle next to "Mail".
