How do I delete large batches of photos from an iPhone 5c?

deleting large batches of photos from IPHONE 5c

when synching my IPHONE5C this morning, it synched all 1200 of photos onto my phone...yikes...how can i get these deleted...i tried your directions, got all the way to 'delete' part and the icon was not highlighted, prohibiting me from deleting..help
