What do I do now that I have set up my sons own account on iCloud/iTunes?

I went through all of the steps and set up my 9 yr old with his own account. But when I go and try to change it on his iphone, it tells me that by deleting the iCloud account on it (mine) it will wipe out everything on his phone on iCloud. Is this ok? am I supposed to do this? Plus I tried to set up his email account with his new iCloud account and it tells me that it cannot verify his information. Any suggestions? Or am I looking at this all the wrong way?
