Why can't I get AirDrop to work between my Macbook (late 2011) and iPad Air?

Cannot get AirDrop to work between my Macbook (late 2011) and iPad Air

Both have the newest software available (iOS8.0.2 and Yosemite Public Beta, newest October update) but I cannot get them to pair/send.

Anyone else having better luck?

I'm not sure if this is true, but I believe that AirDrop requires BT-Low Energy(4.0) to work, and I don't think that 2011 models have it.
