IMac/Safari Issue

My computer regularly locks up both on web pages or in e-mail sending me a spinning multi colored disc which can spin therer for several seconds or more but occasionally requires me to force quit Safari.

I asked a fellow at my local Apple store and his response was to back up all my files and haul the IMac (3 years old with OS X operating system) into the store. There has to be a better answer than that. Anyone have one ?

I would definitely do a backup and then reinstall the OS you are running. See if that works first.
