Earbud question.

I have a 3GS and my second pair of Apple headphones have crapped out on me. Both times the right ear bud goes out.

My concern is the first time my official buds went out I plugged in a pair of generic headphones and it seemed to bust my headphone jack, I had to replace the whole phone (thank god it was still under warranty.)

So, my question is, will any headphones fit the 3GS jack or is there something special about the Apple ones, besides the volume/play/pause control? I'd really love to not have to drop $30 into a pair of headphones that break every 6 months.
