Why can't I use WhatsApp on my iPad

I've downloaded WhatsApp on my Ipad 2 but I believe it's not compatible for the iPad. Can someone tell me what app I can download from the App Store that are similar

The iPod and iPad are not supported by the aforementioned app. Why? It's simply not at this time. A similar app? The native Messages app.
