How to open a ipad mini2 if it is locked because Passcode not correct

My son presented me an ipadmini2 with retina display. He had put a passcode. but now it is not opening with that passcode and the device is locked. How shall I go ahead on functioning the device?

If it's just a Passcode than you can wipe and restore but you will need his Apple ID to remove the iCloud account.
