Battery meter on Macbook does not update unless I toggle percentage on/off

So the topic says it all. The battery meter on my Macbook does not update unless I essentially force it too. I have to toggle "show percentage" for it to update at all. If I plug in the power adapter the lightning bolt does not appear. Nor does it change the power source to say "Power Adapter". If I toggle "show percentage" it appears and changes the power source as well. If I have the percentage showing it while using my Macbook it never changes; unless I toggle "show percentage" off and then back on.

Any advice?

Edit - It also shut down in the middle of watching a movie today. No low battery warning at all. It said it had >50% remaining and then just shut down and started telling me to plug in the power adapter. Yosemite v10.10.1

My brand new MacBook Pro does exactly the same thing. Did you ever find a way around this?
