To jailbreak 3gs or not to jailbreak

hello all I need a little advice

I just got the 3gs iphone and as im finding out now it needs TETHERED JAILBREAK so I can never restart or lose battery without having to plug it back into my computer

Is it worth it and are a lot of people doing it? Thanks for any comments

I'm still struggling with understanding the step-by-step process. Seems there's more than one site offering directions and then there's the tethered process. It all being new, I'm leave frozen in place do jailbreak or not.
