Activate iphone help

Okay so i updated my iphone and i never used it as a phone just as a ipod and what not well i updated it to 3.1.2 just to have all the new features threw itunes. Now its saying it needs to be activated and i cant use it and it sucks. If i use a friends sim card from his iphone can it activate mmine then go back in his phone and work still?
