Friend has an iPhone from the UK...needs to unlock?

My friend just moved back to the states and had on iPhone in the UK with O2.

I have not jailbreaken or unlocked my phone, so I don't know all of the facts.
Is it possible for her to stick my sim card (AT&T) in her phone and it'll work...?
Or (this is exactly what I'm assuming) does she have to unlock it?

Also, she wants to get a plan with AT&T, but not a 2-year agreement. Since she already has the phone, she doesn't have to sign up for an agreement right?

She is planning on paying someone $30 to unlock her phone.
I am wondering if I should just have her download the software and do it herself.
How hard, or should I say "dangerous", would it be for someone that isn't a "techy" to do this?
Can she just download the software, and follow the instructions. Or is there more to it?

Any help would be appreciated!
Need to figure everything out before Thursday.

I was searching and searching through the forums and couldn't find exactly what I"m looking for. Thats why I posted.
She doesn't want her phone jailbreaken. Just unlocked.
Can someone provide a link to the correct unlocking software?
She has an iPhone 3G I beleive, most likely running the current OS.

In order to unlock, you must jailbreak.

If her baseband is 2.30, she won't be able to unlock it.
