Moving my iTunes library

Today I tried to move my iTunes library to an external drive. I change where the library is supposed to be and consolidated it, yet it still remains on my MacBook and some of it is on the external. How do I get this thing off my MacBook? It's eating a lot of space.

I am assuming you followed the instructions found via the following link. Anyway, it seems as if your songs were copied instead of moved.

iTunes for Mac: Moving your iTunes Media folder

I deleted all the content on the external to start over. Okay now I have the library in two places and they are 9gig off in size. I fear deleting the library, per the above link, on the MacBook will cause me to lose a bunch of content. Why are these so far off?
