What's app on different device

I have a work mobile phone which doesn't allow us to download apps. I've installed what's app on a different phone using my work mobile phone number.

Will my work be able to trace my what's app activity and will they be liable for any charges considering I'm using a completely different device?

I don't know, but I'd like to know this:

1. Why would you use your "work phone number" in association with installing an app on what I assume is a non-work-related phone?

I guess they can easily trace your whats app activities.
