According to this YouTuber the instagram and threads app (possibly other Facebook apps) heats up and degrades battery life only by opening the app and doing nothing else.

He shows a 2-4% loss of battery and excessive heating that will degrade the battery in his short video by only having the app open. Due to the nature of this app it affects all iPhones and iPad, including. He showed this on the iPhone 15 pro max and iPhone 14 pro max.

He recommends switching off background refresh or uninstalling the app completely.

Personally I do not use meta or google apps so this hasn’t affected me.

*Update* confirmed to be a problem with iOS 17 and some third party apps (Instagram, Uber, asphalt9) overtaxing the SOC.

“Apple explained that recent updates to some third-party apps on iOS 17, like Instagram, Asphalt 9 and Uber, overload the A17 Pro chip's CPU, causing the iPhone to get warmer than normal. The company is working with third-party developers to implement fixes.” *Update*

*Update 2* This issue is now resolved with a new Instagram app update and iOS 17.0.3. Apple has not throttled the cpu after the update they increased performance.
See post 40 for more details. *Update 2*

Well, if I had a flag, I’d throw it at that video.

I’ve been using iOS 17 since dev beta 1 on my 14 PM and never had any heating issues, and I do use Facebook, Instagram and Threads.

Zero heat issue here.

In the video the iPhone 15 pro max went from 80 degrees to over 100 in a very short time, as Instagram was loaded to the YouTuber profile page then placed face down with no other interaction. He was able to replicate it on his iPhone 14 pro max and iPad. There defiantly seems to be something going on.

Do you have background app refresh switched off for those Instagram and the other meta apps?

Perhaps that’s why.

You started a thread 3 days after ios 17 was released where your phone was heating up quite a bit which honestly was eerily similar to said YouTube video, perhaps it was the external battery or maybe it was not.

Maybe switch background refresh off on those apps for the time being.
Stay safe Lee.

Another YouTuber claims that there is no overheating, until he used Instagram on airplane mode and lost 5% battery

Not related to iPhone or iOS. That was the QuadLock MagSafe battery pack that was overheating. QuadLock has replaced that battery and all is well.

That’s great news.

Did you have the battery before you installed iOS 17 on your 14 pro max?

Well what do you know, I guess the legacy media are finally reporting on it. 2 days after the reports started to surface on X and YouTube.
