Apps compatible with iPhone5 and reverse

I know that an app developed for iPhones older than iPhone5 is working in a letter box. But how about the revers. An app updated to iPhone5 standard. How does it work on iPhone4 ?

If not, when all developers have updated their apps, the older iPhones will be without apps or updates ?

you will get the updates too, but nothing will change in terms of size of the app. it will still fit on your screen.

I believe if an update is pushed and you aren't using an iPhone 5, the screen size will go back to "default" which would have been the screen sizes of all iPhones pre iPhone 5. The App Store would be pointless if you couldn't use apps made for the iPhone 5.
