Camera in iMessage not working

I have an 6s+ running 10.1.1 and its experiencing issues with taking pictures in iMessage. Almost every time I try and take a picture from the iMessage app, the camera won't focus. Or the image on the screen doesnt update. If I exit imessage, open the regular camera app, swipe to another setting and then back to camera, and then try and take a picture in iMessage again, it works fine.

Almost every time I want to take a picture in iMessage I have to go through this process. Anybody else experiencing this? I did some searching and haven't found the same issue.

Try rebooting the device or resetting all settings.

Yeah I've tried rebooting multiple times. Haven't reset settings yet. I'll try that.
