IPhone gets email arbitrarily

I've got the very first IPhone and have not upgraded. Many times I do not have access to email, even when I have all the AT&T bars showing. It's very arbitrary and makes the IPhone very unreliable for email access when traveling. What is the problem and how to I solve it?

There are many factors that could lead to your issue. Type of email, your settings, etc...

You have to be more specific.
