Why are calendar events disappearing

past and current entries disappear while I'm scrolling through my calendar

I don't know. If the calendar is associated with an email account, delete the account and its info from the phone, and then reconfigure the account. Your calendar events should sync back to your phone. I'm assuming you're using an iOS or OS X device.
