How can I upload images taken with my iPad Air 2 images to my PC?

I'd like to just connect my iPad Air 2 to my PC with the Lightning cable to a USB port on my PC and have the PC see an external drive with the iPad images, but this doesn't seem to work. So how can get my iPad images to my PC?

PC as in Windows? http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6413 Install/use the iCloud Control Panel for Windows... it will sync iCloud to your PC - including photos...

Thanks. Was hoping not to have to get involved with iCloud, but I went ahead and set it up, and that does the job. Certainly better than paying $39.95 for iPad Magic.
