I noticed while charging my phone that it was getting hot, I I even felt the heat through my case, and I also noticed that my screen dimmed some when I first felt the heat, i'm assuming it's some kind of protection so the phone doesn't overheat. Would this be true?

Some noticeable warmth while charging is normal... if you think your's may be abnormal - a visit to an Apple GeniusBar might be a good idea.
