Our needs are simple, we just need a browser and to send messages, play simple games etch mostly a time killing "in between" device. The going price for a used 3 WiFi only on eBay, Amazon, craigslist appears to be $265-310. We don't need the latest and greatest, already have a couple laptops, so we just want a simple tablet without spending too much.

Your thoughts are appreciated.

Personally, I would avoid the 3rd generation iPad. This was the first one that Apple released with the retina screen, and there were lots of reports of it being underpowered to drive the retina display. Apple followed the 3rd generation iPad with the 4th generation version about 8 months later, mainly due to this issue. The processor is the A5X, and the 4th generation iPad came with the A6X processor - a faster and more powerful version.
