my screen is turning on occasionally but it wont allow me to open up any apps

What phone?
How old is it?
Has it been dropped? Sat on? Exposed to water?
What happened just before this started?

When your screen turns on, do you unlock the phone so that you can access your apps and allow the screen to stay on longer?
