Water damaged iPhone pictures were on my iPad but disappeared, how can I get them back?

Water damaged iPhone pictures were on my iPad but disappeared!

Did not have my iphone backed up but all recent pictures on my iphone showed up on my ipad. I selected on ipad to upload all pictures and keep originals; the iphone recent pictures disappeared and did not go to the cloud. So far, no one successful in data recovery of the water damaged iphone. Why would the recent pics show up on the ipad and then disappear.

If you had photo sharing turned on they wouldn't disappear.
