I find it funny when people say you can only add apps from the App Store. Not to mention this guy saying you can only backup to iCloud. Both of those are incorrect. You just need to use a computer. Then you can directly install .ipsw's as well as perform full, and encrypted if you want, backups. You can also get to text message backups this way and restore them on Android. Most people who complain about these things on iOS have no idea how to use iOS.
