OP, I think you go to Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars>Gmail> Toggle on Contacts.

Try posting your question as a new thread in the iPhone section. Don't limit it to just the iPhone 5. Syncing your contacts is the same for all iPhones. I'm not sure what to tell you. I enter most of my contacts manually. I don't do much syncing.
