New to all apple devices have imessage question

Hi all, forgive me I'm not apple schooled at all. My nephew got an ipad for Christmas and wants to imessage video me. I need to buy an iPad. Does I message work on all generation of iPad and mini. This is really all it's going to be used for. Any advice on a cost effect one to purchase I'd greatly appreciate, I'm not savy at this, just really want those chat videos to come through easily. Thanks

Yes you can get any generation of iPad and have iMessage. If you want to save the most you can get a refurb iPad directly from Apple. You still get a warrantee and you are certain the iPad is in god condition.
