My MBP is no longer recognizing my Maxtor external hard drive that worked previously.

Mid 2012 MBP OS 10.10.3
External hard drive is not showing up in Disk Utility or in Desktop or Finder.
I have checked the box to view external disks from preferences in the Finder.
I don't remember if I have tried to use this external hard drive since upgrading to Yosemite.

Can you use the drive via another computer? If no... the drive failed.
